Centre for Iron & Steel
The
Research &
Development Centre for Iron & Steel (RDCIS) at Ranchi is the corporate
R & D unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL). Set up in 1972, this
ISO 9001:2000 accredited centre is Asias premier research organisation
in the field of ferrous metallurgy. Presently, there are 740 employees
which include 450 technical staff, engaged in research projects
encompass the entire spectrum of iron & steel technology, from raw
materials to finished products.
The Centre has a modern
laboratory with around 300 sophisticated diagnostic research equipment,
6 pilot plant facilities for Melting and Solidification of Steel,
Experimental Rolling (both hot and cold), Coke making, Coal Combustion,
Sinter Making and Combustion Research for Burner Evaluation and 2
simulators like Gleeble System (for Thermo-mechanical Simulation, Heat
Treatment and Welding) and Hot Dip Galvanising.
The Centre has
developed expertise in diverse technological disciplines that are
utilised for improving process parameters, developing value-added
products, improvement in product quality, energy conservation,
upgradation of existing technologies and introduction of new
technologies in various units of SAIL.
RDCIS also offers
technological services in the form of know-how transfer of technologies
developed by it, consultancy, specialised testing, contract research and
training to public and private organisations both in India and abroad.
